Mayweather vs. Ortiz Results: Bout Just Another Black Eye for Boxing
Boxing fans had waited 16 months for Floyd Mayweather to return to the ring. Mayweather is one of the few boxers that gets anything approximating a main stream audience interested. That means all eyes were on the Mayweather and Ortiz bout.
Once again fans are left coming away shaking their heads at the crumbling state of boxing.
Floyd Mayweather was dominating Victor Ortiz. And while it wasn't a particularly close bout through three rounds, it was entertaining.
Then came the fourth round and things started to get a little funny. It was as if the people directly involved in this bout decided to stop thinking.
Victor Ortiz was growing frustrated by his inability to crack Mayweather's defense. He began a full on assault. Ortiz actually landed a few bunches and managed to get inside of Mayweather.
Then with his head down he jumped up for blatant head-butt. It was as blatant a head-butt as you'll ever see. He had to leap about two feet to make contact with Mayweather.
The ref stepped in and took a point from Ortiz. That is exactly what the ref should have done there. What he should have done next, he didn't. Instead sending the fighters to a neutral corner before starting the match, he just let them go at it.
While he was not sending them to their neutral corners, Victor Ortiz apparently wanted to make nice with Mayweather. Ortiz hugged Mayweather. Why he decided to do this I have no idea, but he did it and he stepped back to find he was still in a live fight.
Mayweather decked him with a one-two and Ortiz was out. He never even put a glove up to try and block the punches as he had no idea he was supposed to start fighting yet.
There is plenty of blame to go around in this, but ultimately it is the ref that should have asserted more control. He didn't. And now, in what might have been the biggest bout of the year, boxing comes off once again looking like a joke.
