Mayweather vs. Ortiz Results: Revenge Sweet Ortiz Gets What He Deserves
Many will debate the method Floyd Mayweather used to defeat Victor Ortiz but two facts remain.
First, Victor Ortiz had already launched two clearly intentional head butts at Mayweather when engaged on the ropes. Head butts can be the difference in a win or loss as they can cause cuts and swelling that drastically impair a fighter.
To intentionally use this tactic isn't new, but it is one that is obviously infuriating to the recipient.
Second, the saying is almost as old as the sport itself, "protect yourself at all times." Not sure why Ortiz thought he didn't have to do that, especially after you just intentionally head-butted a man.
The subsequent two punches that dropped Ortiz was the type of retribution every fighter who has been on the receiving end of a dirty tactic would love to have.
To deck the fighter that quickly after the foul was the swiftest revenge I've ever seen.
That said, Floyd sometimes appears not to care about what others thinks of him. I don't believe that is the truth. Floyd is very proud and he cares about his legacy.
This is a problem he will always have, his critics will never like him. He can't win them over, yet he is still bothered by their criticism.
He unpredictably lost his cool in the post-fight interview with the very irritating Larry Merchant. I have watched Merchant disrespect many of fighters in his pseudo-intellectual tone after fights.
Floyd is not your normal fighter. He was not at ease with his win as I'm sure he was expecting the backlash from what many would call a "sucker-punch."
The fact is, most would do the same if they were able. That is the root of most of the Mayweather hate. Most can't make the sport look as easy as he makes it look.
Anyway you look at it, the punches were legal and justified.
