Carolina Panthers: Rookie QB Cam Newton Will Silence the Haters All Season Long

Donald WoodSep 18, 2011

No one under the sun thought that Cam Newton would blow up in Week 1 like he did, but if you don’t think it will continue than you’re crazy.

The Carolina Panthers No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL draft was argued by many experts as being wasted with the selection of former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, but it seems to be working out just fine.

With 442 yards passing, two touchdowns through the air and another on the ground and plenty of in and out of the pocket success, Newton is proving all of the people who doubted him wrong.

It’s true that those numbers came against a mediocre Arizona Cardinals team whose secondary is inexperienced, but he is already starting to pick apart the tough Green Bay defense in Week 2.

Panther’s receiver Steve Smith said to the Los Angeles Times about Newton’s composure, "He did everything everybody didn't expect him to do. He was on point. He made some great runs, some great reads and some fantastic throws. He made some throws out there that, honestly, as a receiver, it made it easy to catch them."

Newton has looked poised in the pocket even with the added pressure from the tough Packers pass rush, and there has not been many times so far this season where he has looked lost on the field.

With a run game that has been non-existent in the Panthers offense, Newton has had be relied on heavily to keep both plays and drives alive for Carolina.

Most experts believed that Newton would not be good enough to carry the load this season or ever, but his success has many experts rethink their analysis.
