Mayweather vs. Ortiz Results: Why Victor Ortiz Deserves the Blame for Knockout

Justin WeltonJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather Jr. knocked Victor Ortiz out last night in the most unconventional way you will ever see in a professional boxing.

Was it a cheap shot? I am still up in the air about that, but Ortiz deserves all the blame for allowing it to happen. How many times did Ortiz want to apologize for head-butting Mayweather? He went as far as kissing him.

C’mon man, get real. You said your apologies pretty much as soon as you did it. Why would you go back towards Mayweather without being prepared to fight? You must act like this is a street-alley brawl. Would you do that against somebody you don’t trust in an alley?

It makes no sense from a boxing perspective.

Mayweather is a fighter that will do whatever it takes to win. He capitalized on the moment and made Ortiz pay in the ultimate way—KO.

The cardinal rule of boxing is to protect yourself at all times. I got tired of hearing that on Twitter last night, but it is true. This is a fight, not a four-square match. I know I’m not trusting anybody if I am in a fight.

All Ortiz had to do was wait out the last few seconds because the round was winding down. He should know not to jump back in the danger zone with a fighter who just got head-butted.

This was a fight that was looking to be the best in a long time. Mayweather may have won the first three rounds convincingly, but you can’t deny that he was getting hit more often in the fourth round. It could have been a memorable fight after that.

The fight had all the making of a quality one. Boxing built it up to the highest pinnacle, but again, the sport of boxing let the world down.
