Dez Bryant Injury: How Does Injured WR Affect Tony Romo's Fantasy Stock?

Ryan PhillipsSep 18, 2011

Sports Illustrated's Peter King tweeted Saturday night that he does not believe Dallas Cowboys' wide receiver Dez Bryant will play Sunday. It doesn't look good for Bryant, whose quad injury has held him out of practice this week.

That is bad news for Tony Romo owners, as the quarterback will face a San Francisco team with what appears to be a very good pass defense. Though they were facing the lowly Seahawks in Week 1, the 49ers held their division rivals to just 155 yards passing, and Seattle quarterback Tarvaris Jackson finished the day with a quarterback rating of 78.3.

Romo opened the season with a very nice performance against the New York Jets, until he almost single-handedly gave the game away down the stretch in the Cowboys' 27-24 loss. Still, Romo completed 23-of-36 passes, for 342 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. He also fumbled twice—losing one—but still finished with a quarterback rating of 101.9.

While losing a dynamic weapon like Bryant is bad news, Romo is probably still a safe start this week. Though Bryant had three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, the Cowboys still have several solid targets.

Against the Jets, Romo found Jason Witten six times for 110 yards, while Miles Austin grabbed five balls for 90 yards and a touchdown. The ninth-year veteran did a great job spreading the ball around and looked extremely comfortable in the pocket against what is certainly a stellar Jets defense.

This week Kevin Ogletree will step in for Bryant if he can't go, and despite the 49ers' solid Week 1 returns on defense, you should still start Romo. It's easy to forget just how good he looked in the opener because of his disastrous finish.

Despite the turnovers against the Jets and Dez Bryant's likely absence, Romo is still a solid start option in Week 2.
