NFL Predictions Week 2: Which Players Will Post Monstrous Stats?

Jon DoveSep 18, 2011

The NFL is all about matchups and mismatches, with the idea being to exploit all opportunities.  You don't need a crystal ball to identify the potential breakout performances.

In order to identify these players, you need to look at matchups and past production.  Teams with a strong pass rush facing a poor offensive line could be expected to create a ton of pressure.  Below are several players I expect to have monstrous games.

The Buffalo Bills opened the season with a big win.  However, they still have major holes across their offensive line.  These holes will allow the Oakland Raiders to create pressure.

I expect Kamerion Wimbley to be turned loose, racking up several sacks.  He not only will be facing a poor offensive line, but also a mobility-challenged Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The decision makers in Jacksonville decided it would be better to save money than to keep an experienced quarterback.  They cut David Garrard just a few days before the opening game, handing the ball to Luke McCown.

McCown is nothing more than a backup caliber quarterback, leaving the Jets defense licking their chops.  I expect ball-hawk Antonio Cromartie to jump several passes and record an interception.

Aside from a few poor decisions, Tony Romo looked good in his season opener.  He handled the Jets pressure and was able to make some plays.  However, those mistakes cost the Cowboys the game, and brought a ton of criticism.

I expect Romo to have a big game against the 49ers.  San Francisco doesn't have a great secondary, providing Romo with several areas to exploit.  They also struggle moving the football, giving Romo more time on the field.

Mike Vick makes his return to Atlanta, looking to lead the Eagles to an undefeated record.  Vick will be playing with a lot of passion and energy.  The Falcons struggled to make solid tackles, now they face a team with plenty of elusive runners.

I expect the Eagles to have a lot of yards after the catch, padding Vick's stats.  He will also need to make plays with his feet, as the Falcons have a good pass rush.  Atlanta will create pressure because of their pass rush and the questionable Eagles offensive line.
