Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Why Money May's KO Punch Was Perfectly Legal (with Video)

Mick AkersSep 17, 2011

Immediately after Floyd Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz with a controversial two-punch KO, the boxing world went into a frenzy: Was it legal or not?

Rule No.1 in boxing is to protect yourself at all times. Referees tell fighters that before every fight.

Ortiz got caught up in the hype of the fight and the excitement of the moment, and he let his guard down for a split second as he tried to apologize for his head butt attempt.

And, boy, did Ortiz pay for it.

No matter how you look at it, the hit was legal. Ortiz tried to head butt Mayweather and the ref called a timeout. You can't expect Mayweather just to sit back and say, "OK, I'll let that head butt slide, even though it could have changed the fight in Ortiz's favor."

After the warning, referee Joe Cortez allowed the fight to continue. And there is nothing in the boxing rule book saying that you can't hit a fighter once the ref lets the fight continue.

In most fights, of course, when you see boxers touch gloves after a foul, it's not often you see the originally offending boxer hug and kiss his opponent—yes, the one that he just tried to harm with a illegal blow. And that's seemingly what set Mayweather off.

The bad blood between the two fighters boiled over, and Mayweather let Ortiz know that he didn't have to let that kind of foul go, especially after Ortiz tried to embarrass Mayweather with a kiss on the cheek after the head butt, and May let Ortiz have it.

If a rematch happens, that will be OK in my book, but I certainly don't feel it is mandatory.

Let's move on to bigger and better things, and hopefully get the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight finally set and booked for the public to see.
