Mayweather vs Ortiz Results: Mayweather Knockout Shouldn't Be Controversial

Austin GreenSep 17, 2011

Floyd "Money" Mayweather's fourth round knockout of Victor Ortiz will be heavily criticized in the next few days, but his actions were completely appropriate.

Before drinking the kool-aid of Mayweather's legions of haters, lets get the facts straight.

1) Ortiz, despite what he said post-fight, intentionally headbutted Mayweather. It was not an accident. You don't just lunge forward, leading with the top of your head, on accident.

2) Ortiz apologized before the referee sent him to his corner and deducted a point. He embraced Mayweather, gave him a little peck on the cheek and said he was sorry. Totally appropriate thing to do.

3) After the referee instructed the fighters to come together and fight, Ortiz went to apologize to Mayweather again, which is fine, but certainly not advisable. Nobody would have criticized Ortiz for putting up his hands and fighting without apologizing a second time.

4) Mayweather accepted his second embrace by tapping gloves and then put his hands up. When you are a professional fighter and your opponent puts his hands up, you should probably put yours up, too. Especially when the referee calls for action to resume.

5) Mayweather landed two vicious blows while Ortiz had his hands down, because, you know, that's what boxers are supposed to do when their opponent's hands are down.

Look, I am all for good sportsmanship. It's one of the most beautiful things about competition. But you have to know when to stop being polite and start doing your job. Ortiz made a rookie mistake and got punished for it by an incredibly experienced fighter (and for the record, Ortiz's headbutt was much more unsportsmanlike than Mayweather's knockout).

I understand why Mayweather has more than his fair share of haters. When you are that cocky—that arrogant—you are bound to piss some people off. But Mayweather is going to receive a ton of criticism over the next several days and none of it will be justified.

Say what you want about Floyd "Money" Mayweather. He is one of the most polarizing athletes in history and for good reason.

But if you think his knockout of Ortiz was a cheap shot, then you just don't understand the principles of boxing.
