Mayweather vs. Ortiz: What Money Needs to Focus on to Avoid Massive Upset
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a big favorite to win his title fight against Victor Ortiz. Mayweather's track record and off-the-chart talent dictate that favorite status. Still, we are talking about a 34-year-old fighter that hasn't been in the ring in 16 months.
It is not a big stretch of the imagination to think he could slip and give Ortiz a window to knock him out. If he focuses on the next three things, that won't happen.
Create Distance
Mayweather needs to keep Ortiz at a distance all fight. This will allow him to use his tremendous quickness and accurate punching to his advantage.
Ortiz is going to want to turn this into a closed in brawl. Mayweather needs to make sure this stays a boxing match. He cannot allow himself to get trapped against the ropes and needs to focus on staying in the center of the ring.
Counter Punches
This is a Mayweather trademark. His amazing defense allows him to roll away from punches yet stay in perfect position to counter.
Mayweather can counter with the straight right time and time again. Eventually it will wear Ortiz down, and open him up for all of Mayweather's deadly punches.
Victor Ortiz
This one is obvious, right? But just because it is obvious to us, it doesn't mean Money is thinking the same thing.
Mayweather has been away from the ring for 16 months. During that time he has had just about every distraction there for a person to have. He seems to court these distractions.
He has to let them all go for this fight. He can't be thinking about his next bout, his next tweet, or another reason he should be considered the greatest of all-time.
He needs to focus on the task at hand.
