Mayweather vs. Ortiz Undercard: Previewing the 3 Matches Before Main Event

Tim DanielsSep 17, 2011

Floyd Mayweather against Victor Ortiz is the fight that everybody is looking forward to tonight, but there will be three matches before the main event. Here is a quick preview for each of those three undercard bouts. All odds courtesy of Bodog.

Erik Morales (-800) vs. Pablo Cesar Cano (+500)

Morales is a name boxing fans will know. The 35-year-old Mexican defeated Manny Pacquiao in 2005 and has a career record of 51-7. The veteran returns to MGM Grand Garden Arena where he lost to Marcos Rene Maidana in April.

Cano, a fellow Mexican, has yet to suffer a defeat during his young career. The 21-year-old member of Golden Boy Promotions is 22-0-1 but has yet to pick up a marquee victory. He knocked out Pablo Lugo in June and is looking to take the next step by upsetting Morales.

Prediction: Morales by unanimous decision

Jesus Vargas (-275) vs. Josesito Lopez (+215)

Vargas enters this bout on quite a roll. He knocked out Walter Estrada in the second round during their June encounter, and Vivian Harris was forced to retire after the first round in April. For his career, Vargas stands at 16-0 with nine knockouts.

The 27-year-old Lopez is 29-3 in his career and has never been knocked out. His most recent match was a knockout victory over Mike Dallas Jr. in January. It was the first career loss for Dallas and allowed Lopez to jump up and take on Vargas tonight.

Prediction: Vargas by fifth-round knockout

Saul Alvarez (-1300) vs. Alfonso Gomez (+725)

Alvarez is a huge favorite in this fight and rightfully so. He's coming off back-to-back wins over British opponents Matthew Hatton (unanimous decision) and Ryan Rhodes (12th-round TKO) and is 37-0-1 in his career. He's scored a knockout in five of his past seven fights.

Gomez is a much less impressive 22-4-2 in his career, but has won his last five bouts. He is also undefeated against fellow Mexicans since turning pro in 2001 (7-0-1). He might survive longer than most people are anticipating, but Gomez won't be able to overcome Alvarez.

Prediction: Alvarez by 10th-round knockout
