Oregon Football: Letter of Inquiry Another Reason the System Is Broken

John HeinisJun 6, 2018

For those who haven't heard, the Oregon Ducks have received a letter of inquiry from the NCAA.

The letter stems from possible recruiting violations, particularly with Willie Lyles of Complete Scouting Services.

Whispers have been overheard that former Ducks running back Lache Seastrunk was given improper benefits during the recruiting process.

Seastrunk has transferred to Baylor since playing for Oregon in 2010 but has still met with NCAA officials as recently as late August.

Oregon's 2011 National Package had no 2011 eligible recruits, and the package was allegedly put together by Lyles.

Lyles is involved in a basically identical investigation with LSU, so his days as a college football agent seem numbered.

An unfortunate situation for Lyles. While the sports agent was most likely in the wrong, the bottom line is that this is nothing new.

In the past year, the NCAA has dealt with scandal among scandal in college football.

The ugly truth is that recruiting has had a fair share of corruption for decades, and it is not likely to change anytime soon.

Based on the details currently available, the Ducks are probably going to get a slap on the wrist.

Going 12-1 in 2010 before losing a close championship game to Auburn, odds are that Oregon will not have any players suspended and will still be bowl eligible for years to come.

At the end of the day, this is more of an inconvenience than anything else.

Instead of targeting individual agents and schools, the NCAA needs to implement a new, stricter policy regarding recruiting if they want to make any headway in this area of concern.
