Cena Holds a Cookie: The Prophetical Nature of an Internet Image

Kaizar CantuSep 16, 2011

Every hundred years or so, an image like the one displayed in this article spawns out of nowhere (the net’s everywhere, yet being everywhere is probably an equivalent to being nowhere) and pushes a couple chuckles out of our postmodern systems.

That’s fine.

I was watching Armageddon 2008’s DVD; John Cena defended his World Heavyweight Championship against former champion Chris Jericho. For some reason, perhaps a submission attempt by Jericho, the picture flashed in mind immediately.

Why was this surreal scene, Muppet-ish in nature, summoned to present its oddness and lay there, in the back of my mind, for a couple seconds?

The image, believe or not, is a prophetical statement. Maybe it was not intended as such; maybe the artist just wanted to express his disgust for John Cena through a picture which seems ridiculously hilarious at first glance, yet holds an encoded message.

There’s a serious declaration on who might be John Cena’s most dangerous opponent hidden under the blue fur and lost-in-addiction eyes.

The Cookie Monster holds John Cena in an ankle lock; Dr. Thuganomics clutches the loot, a chocolate chip cookie, unwilling to tap in spite of the surely unbearable pain.

Have you deciphered the message already?

Any fan of Phil Brooks has wondered about the first two letters of his in-ring name: CM. Originally “Chick Magnet”, Brooks has suggested a variety of words to signify those letters: Charles Manson, Charles Montgomery, Chicago Made, Crazy Mariachi, Championship Material and….Cookie Monster.

“Cookie Monster” Punk was involved in a red-hot (which did not reach “white levels”, unfortunately) feud with The Champ, John Cena. It spawned three incredible matches and gave Brooks a ton of much-needed kayfabe credibility. John Cena himself stated Punk’s the only one good enough to go one-on-one with him, thus cementing him as his prime nemesis.

Punk’s stance within the long list of John Cena opponents as the most dangerous to him is debatable, but right now he’s perhaps the only wrestler who holds a credible opportunity as an opponent (with all the significance the word holds within) to Mr. Cena.

That brings me back to the prophetical nature of the image. ROH enthusiasts and fans with a keen eye for real talent surely recognized Phil Brook’s reservoir. Such a wrestling fan, most probably, found in “Cookie Monster” Punk the perfect antagonist for John Cena’s superhuman booking and decided to make an artistic representation in a most interesting manner.

I’m amazed. Punk might be embroiled in a different feud right now, but the possibility’s still there, the picture’s accuracy still remains.

I’m amazed...truly amazed.
