Cristiano Ronaldo Et Al: What They Said, Really Meant and Definitely Did Not

Linus Fernandes
Jun 5, 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo, Amir Khan, Pep Guardiola, Caroline Wozniacki, Graeme Swann and Samantha Stosur have no canned words of wisdom in this installment of quotes from the world of sport.

If Ronaldo is Narcissus reincarnated, Amir Khan is on the warpath.

Guardiola isย flabbergasted at a 24-second goal and the Woz is no wizard in the face of Serena's missiles.

Graeme Swann is still joking in the hot seat and Samantha Stosur has hot pockets.

Here's what they said, really meant and definitely didn't.

Cristiano Ronaldo Has It All

1 of 6

What he said:

"I think that because I am rich, handsome and a great player, people are envious of me. I donโ€™t have any other explanation."

Cristiano Ronaldo is aย narcissist. The Portuguese striker reacts to being booed by Dinamo fans at Zagreb. Real Madrid triumphed 1-0.

What he really meant:

โ€œDonโ€™t Messi with me.โ€

What he definitely didnโ€™t:

โ€œModestyโ€™s my middle name.โ€

Amir Khan Wants to Fight a ‘Chicken’

2 of 6

What he said:

"

In my opinion, Mayweather is a chicken. He is doing everything to avoid me just as he did everything to avoid fighting Manny Pacquiao. I donโ€™t want to sound cocky or arrogant but I believe the real reason for Mayweather avoiding me is that he knows I have his number. Mayweather knows if he ever fights me, his โ€˜zeroโ€™ย will go.

"

Amir Khan isย spoilingย for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The unified WBA and IBF world champion would like to end Mayweatherโ€™s streak of 39 unbeaten bouts.

What he really meant:

โ€œIโ€™m merely upholding the long-held tradition of trash-talking my opponent before a match-up. It makes for great copy in the press.โ€

What he definitely didnโ€™t:

โ€œRun, chicken, run.โ€

Pep Guardiola Needs Stronger, Quicker Legs

3 of 6

What he said:

"Not even Usain Bolt would have been able to stop him. Iโ€™d like my team to have legs with so much running in them."

Barca manager, Pep Guardiola, does notย blameย his side for allowing AC Milanโ€™s Alexandre Patoโ€™s fifth-quickest goal in the Champions Leagueโ€”in all of 24 seconds.

What he really meant:

โ€œA real pity Patoโ€™s goal did not meet the same fate that Boltโ€™s 100 meters run at the World championships did.โ€

What he definitely didnโ€™t:

โ€œWhat if I picked the Jamaican relay squad as defenders? Would that have worked?โ€

Caroline Wozniacki Is Not Amused by ‘Wham-Bam’ Serena

4 of 6

What she said:

โ€œWell, you know, itโ€™s kind of like, okay, you feel like youโ€™re in the game, youโ€™re in the game, and then bam, bam, youโ€™re not in the game anymore.โ€

Caroline Wozniacki makes herย excusesย for her semifinal defeat against Serena Williams at the US Open.

What she really meant:

โ€œI was outgunned by Serena. Bang, bang, youโ€™re dead.โ€

What she definitely didnโ€™t:

โ€œThatโ€™s what I term a โ€˜loadedโ€™ย statement.โ€

Graeme Swann Is No ‘BullDog’

5 of 6

What he said:

โ€œI canโ€™t make speeches like Churchill and Iโ€™ll try to be as natural as I can.โ€

Graeme Swannโ€”the comedianโ€”takesย over from Stuart Board as skipper of the English T20 squad for two matches against West Indies next week.

Swann claimed:

"

Itโ€™s a Twenty20 series with a lot of young lads so Iโ€™ll have to change the way I am from the Test side.

Iโ€™m very much the joker in the Test team, Iโ€™m there for a stupid quip at the end of the session. With this Twenty20 side, Iโ€™ll naturally have to be more grown up and mature about things.

But I donโ€™t intend to be deadly serious and change too much. I believe a fairly high-spirited approach has made me the cricketer I am.

Iโ€™ll certainly look to keep that going within my own game and, if thatโ€™s infectious to others, then great.

"

What Swann really meant:

โ€œI have games to win, not speeches to make.โ€

What Swann definitely didnโ€™t:

โ€œIโ€™ll just get the Windians to fall overโ€”laughing their guts out.โ€

Samantha Stosur Can Fit a Lot into Her Back Pocket

6 of 6

What she said:

โ€œIt was a good thing to have that in your back pocket, playing someone whoโ€™s never been in one before.โ€

Samantha Stosur had theย advantageย of two major semifinal appearances over her German opponent, Angelique Kerber, at the US Open.

What she really meant:

โ€œThatโ€™s what I call a true ADVANTAGEโ€ฆDeuce Kerber.โ€

What she definitely didnโ€™t:

โ€œI donโ€™t actually have a back pocket. You noted that?โ€
