Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz: 5 Boxers Money May Could End Up Fighting Next

Mick AkersSep 16, 2011

After Saturday's welterweight showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz, all of the talk will be surrounding the topic of who will Mayweather fight next?

With a select number of fighters in a few different weight classes at the level ready to take on the man many believe is the pound-for-pound champ, Mayweather has a few attractive fights he can choose from.

Here are the five fights Mayweather could take on after his return to the ring against Ortiz tomorrow night.

Andre Berto

1 of 5

Floyd Mayweather taking on Andre Berto—Berto lost his only fight as a pro to Victor Ortiz earlier this year—would be a great fight matching up two defensive, strategic boxers.

It would be more of a boxing fan's kind of fight, one where the average fan might be upset with the outcome because a knockout in this fight is almost guaranteed not to happen.

With a fight pitting two of the biggest names in the sport today, it would be successful enough to actually make happen, which is what Mayweather looks for in a fight in the first place.

Amir Khan

2 of 5

A Floyd Mayweather vs. Amir Khan fight would need to clear a few hurdles first to make the fight happen.

Mayweather wants Khan to first beat his 22-year-old boxing prodigy Jessie Vargas before he can step into the ring with him, and Khan hit Mayweather back with a demand saying if Vargas can beat Marcos Maidana then he would fight Vargas.

If Mayweather is looking for one more fight before getting the Manny Pacquiao fight going, Khan would be a great pick as they are similar fighters, giving Mayweather the best tune-up fight before the hopeful mega-showdown happens.

Sergio Martinez

3 of 5

A Floyd Mayweather and Sergio Martinez bout would be the best fight for Mayweather if the Manny Pacquiao fight never gets signed.

The fight would pit two of the top three pound-for-pound fighters in the world and would be an exciting fight as Martinez isn't afraid to take chances, giving plenty of opportunities for both fighters to end the fight with a knockout,

Martinez has already said that he would take on either Mayweather of Pacquiao at 154 lbs, and I think that besides Pacquiao, Martinez would pose the biggest threat to Mayweather's perfect record in the ring.

Timothy Bradley

4 of 5

Timothy Bradley has the reputation that he can't draw a big enough following on pay-per-view. Well, a fight with Floyd Mayweather will solve that problem and give the boxing world a quality fight in the process.

Bradley is more of a defensive fighter these days and not really the same type of fighter that he was before he won the WBC light welterweight title in 2008.

The fight would be a chess match of sorts, but we all know that no one can out counter punch Mayweather. The fight would still be a interesting bout with the kind of action any pure boxing fan would love.

Manny Pacquiao

5 of 5

Of course, the No.1 fight all of the boxing and sports world wants to see happen is Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.

The fight would put the two best fighters of the last decade against each other, and after a heavy war of words over the past few years, the bad blood would finally get a chance to spill over to the ring and give the boxing world one of the best fights in boxing history.

With a fight or two for each fighter expected to happen before anything between the two fighters gets done, in all likelihood this fight could take place this time next year, finally giving the world what they have been waiting for after all these years.
