Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 2: 5 Running Backs Who Will Break Out

Jordan SmithJun 2, 2018

Your fantasy team need help? There's plenty left on the waiver wire. Working the waiver wire is a big part of winning your fantasy league.

These running backs have shown flashes, but are thought to be unreliable products. All of them are largely unowned.

Grabbing any of these guys could give you a significant edge this week and for the rest of the season.

Cadillac Williams

1 of 5

Williams is the No. 1 waiver guy to go after this week.

He came in to service after Steven Jackson left with a quad injury and performed admirably. Williams had 19 carries for 91 yards and an additional five receptions for 49 yards.

The Rams will face a tough Giants run defense this week. However, the Rams will rely on Cadillac more than ever. Bradford is banged up and Danny Amendola may be out for the entire season.

That means a big workload for Cadillac this week, and given his performance last week I'd at least start him in your flex position.

Darren Sproles

2 of 5

The New Orleans Saints dropped Reggie Bush this offseason and went out and signed the guy they always though Bush would be like.

Darren Sproles' impact was felt immediately. Though he is listed as a running back, he carried the ball only two times last week. However, he was targeted in the passing game 11 times, catching seven for 75 yards. Additionally, he returned a punt for a touchdown.

Sproles will see more action in the passing game with Marques Colston and Lance Moore out for now. Go and get him and you will be well rewarded.

Ben Tate

3 of 5

Tate exploded last game against the Colts.

He carried the ball 24 times against the Colts for 116 yards and a touchdown. Given Arian Foster's hamstring situation, he could easily see the field as a starter again. He's only owned in 56 percent of ESPN teams, so he could very well be available in your league.

He will likely see carries in a part time role as Foster heals. But Foster might not be fully ready to go this week and the Texans will be as careful with him as possible. If Foster ends up hurt again, Tate will be a great player to have.

Dexter McCluster

4 of 5

Dexter McCluster may be a bit of a reach, but he is one of the few players on the Chiefs who's looked good in their first game and in the preseason.

McCluster carried the ball four times, two more than Thomas Jones, for 42 yards against the Bills. He also caught the ball five times for another 25 yards.

If McCluster gets nine plus touches a game, he could be a viable fantasy option in 12 team or deeper leagues. Outside of Jamaal Charles, he might be the only other productive option on the Chiefs offense. McCluster is owned in only 4.7 percent of leagues on ESPN. He could be worth a flier.

Jerome Harrison

5 of 5

Did you know Jahvid Best had 21 rushing attempts last game?

For a guy who's only 5'10'', 199 lbs, that's a lot. Especially given his long history of injuries. He's had many concussions, dating all the way back to his college days and suffered one this preseason. He battled turf toe all last year, which kept him out the majority of the season.

Jerome Harrison is a solid back and (if and when Best goes down) will be the guy for the Lions. Harrison has a career 4.8 yards per carry and has produced well when given the opportunity. It's hard to predict a player getting injured, but Best is as high risk an injury player as it gets.
