Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Money May Fight Still Lacking Manny Pacquiao

Gabe ZaldivarSep 16, 2011

The bout between Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather has certainly been a boon for boxing interest.

However, this marquee Mayweather match is missing just one thing: Manny Pacquiao.

Who could possibly ask for a more dramatic pairing in Mayweather and Ortiz? I mean, both men have come from humble beginnings.

Perfect Foes

Both men have had tumultuous lives. Ortiz and his brother were left by their parents. The 24-year-old boxer still has a venomous relationship with his father. Mayweather can't stop fighting with his.

Ortiz is in the middle of a redemption tour. Every bout is one more plea with fans that he was wrong to quit against Marcos Maidana.

Mayweather is proving himself as well. The legendary boxer doesn't want to just be the best, he wants to be known as the best, and he proclaims as much to anyone that will listen.

This fight promises to be one of the most entertaining in years. That does not, however, mean it is the best possible bout we could have.

We Still Want Manny

No, the distinction of best possible bout in the current landscape remains Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. But I fear it will remain a pipe dream.

It remains legend—something we can only live out in our heads. Destined to live a life in similar quandaries such as, what if the Star Wars prequels weren't horrible?

The one thing that makes a Pacquiao match so great is the talent level. Both PacMan and Mayweather are at the same place in their careers. They also happen to be of the same ilk, build and brand.

They are boxer's boxers, fighting with their head as much as their fists and heart. The speed and form would be comparable. In fact, you couldn't build to like boxers.

I will enjoy the Ortiz fight, much like you would the meal you settle for when you fail to see something delectable on the menu. When the meal you really wanted is at the other table, your dinner just doesn't taste as good as it should.

I will stop my whining. Good enough will be just fine on Saturday.
