NFL Picks Week 2: Which Games Will Be Over by Halftime?

Ryan PhillipsSep 15, 2011

The NFL's opening week featured several blowouts, which should have been expected after a short offseason. Teams that got down early seemed to pack things in and try to refocus for the next week.

While Week 2 should feature closer scores across the board, there are two games that look as though they might be over by halftime.

Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) at Detroit Lions (1-0)

The Lions looked great in their opening week win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Quarterback Matthew Stafford led his team on the road and they knocked off the Bucs 27-20. The No. 1 overall pick from the 2009 NFL draft picked apart Tampa Bay's secondary, completing 24-of-33 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Pro Bowler Calvin Johnson.

Detroit controlled the ball and the clock—spending more than 36 minutes on offense—and shined defensively as well. The Lions held Tampa Bay to just 315 yards of total offense and only 56 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs looked horrendous in a 41-7 Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Kansas City turned the ball over three times and gained a paltry 213 yards on offense. Quarterback Matt Cassel completed 22-of-36 passes for just 119 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, while Jamaal Charles was held to just 56 yards rushing.

In addition to that, the Chiefs lost Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry for the season thanks to an ACL tear.

While the Lions are riding high, the Chiefs are still reeling from that Week 1 thrashing. I expect Stafford and his team to come out firing on all cylinders while the Chiefs will still be looking for answers. This one could get ugly early.

Seattle Seahawks (0-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (0-1)

Someone is going to have to pay for what happened to the Steelers during a 35-7 Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, they'll be the ones standing across from Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The Steelers looked awful against the Ravens, giving away seven turnovers and surrendering 385 total yards. I seriously doubt Pittsburgh will allow itself to get pushed around like that again.

Seattle also had a rough first week in a 33-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks trailed 16-0 at the half before making a feeble attempt at a comeback. They gained just 219 yards of total offense, including just 64 yards on the ground.

Pete Carroll's team looked terrible with Tarvaris Jackson running things and against an experienced and vicious Steelers defense out for blood this week, this is another game that could get ugly quickly.

Expect the Steelers to roll.
