NFL Picks Week 2: 2 Road Teams Ready to Roll

Eric BallSep 15, 2011

Sure it sounds crazy to pick the Cincinnati Bengals on the road.

But that’s gambling baby!

Sometimes the best teams to bet on are never the one’s you would expect. Here are two games that sound wacky on paper, but are worth taking a risk on:

Cincinnati Bengals +3.5 @ Denver Broncos

Did you watch the Broncos on Monday night?

From the horrible run game to the horrible run defense to the insane amount of penalties…it was ugly.

They had a QB controversy before the season even started and it’s only gotten worse. CB Champ Bailey (far and away their best player) is dealing with a hamstring injury that has made him 50/50 for the game.

Running back Knowshon Moreno, who looked incredibly slow and ineffective Monday, is also dealing with a hamstring injury. Top receiver Brandon Lloyd (groin) and top DE Elvis Dumervil (shoulder) are both questionable.

Sure, Bengals QB Andy Dalton is dealing with a forearm injury, but it sounds like he will end up playing on Sunday.

With no other major injuries to speak of, the frisky 1-0 Bengals enter this game relatively healthy.

Expect the Bengals to run the ball down the Broncos throats as they dominate time of possession and give Dalton plenty of time to make the right throw.

With a 3.5-point cushion…this is an easy one.

Trends:

Bengals are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.

Bengals are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs AFC.

Bengals are 5-1 ATS in their last six games in September.

Bengals are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog.

Broncos are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game.

Broncos are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0.

Jacksonville Jaguars +9 vs. New York Jets

These are two teams that don’t have a ton of offensive firepower and prefer to run the ball and keep the possessions to a minimum.

The Jets defense is getting slower and isn’t the top five unit of the last two years. The Jags certainly don’t have a prolific passing attack, but they can still run the ball effectively and can protect a small lead.

Considering you have a nine point cushion…that shouldn’t be a problem.

Trends:

Jaguars are 6-0 ATS in their last six meetings.

Jaguars are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a S.U. win.

Jaguars are 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings in New York.

Jaguars are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following a ATS win.

Jets are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0.
