Braylon Edwards: Former Wolverine Has Every Right to Sue Michigan Restaurant

Brandon GalvinSep 14, 2011

Former Wolverines WR Braylon Edwards may no longer be welcome in Michigan.

At this point, the current San Francisco 49ers star may not care much.

Edwards is currently looking to sue a Michigan restaurant for slander, which may have cost him his coveted long-term contract this past offseason.

While 49ers receiver Braylon Edwards was looking for a job after his contract with the Jets expired, two members of his entourage found themselves accused of knifing and/or forking two employees at a restaurant in Michigan.

Though initial reports cleared Edwards of any involvement, the restaurant issued a statement implicating the former Wolverine: "Braylon Edwards was present and involved, but it’s an ongoing police investigation so at this time we don’t have any further information."

Edwards never was charged, but now Edwards is taking action.  According to the Associated Press, Edwards has sued the restaurant and three of its employees for slander, claiming that the false allegations prompted an unnamed team that had offered him a contract with $15 million guaranteed to acquire a case of cold feet in response to the contention that Edwards had a role in the incident.

I’m sure people would love to accuse Edwards of simply trying to make a quick buck, but this is far more than that.

First, there’s the fact that his name was slandered. He deserves compensation for that regardless.

Then there’s the caveat that Edwards could have secured the contract he was seeking. Instead, he’s being forced to play for peanuts on a one-year deal, despite being one of the bigger star wideouts in the NFL.

The concern for all athletes, especially our gridiron warriors, is the lack of job security in the league and overall fear for one’s safety, especially while playing on a one-year deal. If Edwards gets hurt at any point this season, he may not be able to secure that long-term contract he is seeking next season.

If a team pulled a hefty and lengthy contract off the table in light of this situation, Edwards definitely deserves compensation. He is currently trying to earn a contract he already earned. I know people don’t appreciate talking about people who have made millions of dollars in the past, but this is simply unjust.

Braylon earned his contract last year with the Jets and forced to take a massive pay cut, perhaps solely because of this situation.

No matter who you are, put yourself in his shoes and understand the situation. He had nothing to do with situation at the restaurant, but is apparently taking the brunt of it all.
