Week 2 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Why You Must Add Broncos' WR Eric Decker

Andrea HangstSep 14, 2011

Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker made a name for himself in his team's loss to the Oakland Raiders on Monday night, returning a punt 90 yards for a touchdown.

That's not all he did for the team, either. He caught three passes for 53 yards, the second-greatest yardage total for a Broncos receiver that night.

For these reasons, Decker has turned into a valuable waiver-wire option for fantasy football teams in deeper leagues or for those with points for return yardage.

There is also a good chance that Decker's looks could increase as the season goes on.

Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton struggled on Monday night, and it was obvious in his stats: His nine-receiver, 304-yard performance is different than those of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees.

In contrast to those quarterbacks, who spread the ball around as a response to the level of talent that surrounds them, Orton appeared to be searching for someone to emerge as another go-to target beyond starter Brandon Lloyd.

And with the Broncos running game virtually non-existent, Orton needs get yardage in the air if the Broncos have a chance to contend this season.

Decker looks like the early favorite to be Orton's No. 2 option. While I consider any addition of a Broncos wide receiver, even Lloyd, to carry significant risk, those in deeper leagues have fewer options and more immediate needs.

Thus, I think that Decker has a leg up on many of the other receivers likely available on your waiver wire.

Again, if you also count return yardage in your league, he has additional value.

Don't ignore Decker just because he's a Bronco. Just as he may have a lot to offer his real-life team, it also appears he could make significant contributions on the fantasy level as well.
