Week 2 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: 5 Players Bound for Superstardom
Every NFL season, a few players in the league have a breakout year, becoming more than the stars they were tabbed to be.
They become superstars, the elite of the league.
In some cases, we could see it coming. In others, they come out of nowhere, taking advantage of an opportunity they've been waiting for their whole careers.
Last season, the breakout star in fantasy football was Houston Texans running back Arian Foster, who scored the most points in fantasy.
This season, there are already a few players who appear ready to take the next step from stars to superstars.
Here are five players you can anticipate improving on their career averages this season and rewarding you with fantasy gold.
5. Kevin Kolb, QB, Arizona Cardinals
1 of 5Kevin Kolb, the former backup to Michael Vick with the Philadelphia Eagles, has been waiting to break out for a while now, and he likely would have had a very good season in 2010 if it wasn't for Vick's emergence.
Last season, he had some big names when given the chance to start with the Eagles, including a 326-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Atlanta Falcons.
Now given the starting job with the Arizona Cardinals, Kolb has a fine weapon in superstar Larry Fitzgerald to throw the ball to, as well as an underrated No. 2 in Early Doucet.
He opened up his career with the Cardinals by proceeding to pass for 302 yards and two touchdowns in the their season-opening 28-21 win over Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.
4. Dez Bryant, WR, Dallas Cowboys
2 of 5Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant may have a ways to go to become a superstar in reality (I touched on it a bit here), but in terms of fantasy, he's likely going to put up some big numbers this season and for years to come.
In his rookie season in 2010, Bryant racked up 561 yards and six touchdowns through the air in 12 games. He also ran back two punts for touchdowns.
There is some risk with Bryant, given he's coming back from a broken leg and suffered cramps in the Cowboys' Week 1 defeat to the New York Jets, but in terms of production per game, he figures to put up some monster games with Tony Romo at the helm.
He had three catches for 71 yards and touchdown in Week 1.
3. LeSean McCoy, RB, Philadelphia Eagles
3 of 5It's easy to think that with all of the Eagles' weapons, star running back LeSean McCoy may not have as good a season as last year.
But McCoy's Week 1 was all you needed to know, rushing 15 times for 122 yards and a touchdown, as well as adding two receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown.
The simple fact of the matter is that head coach Andy Reid puts his players in the best places to succeed, so even if McCoy won't get a heavy workload some games, he still has the potential to put up huge numbers.
And there's also the fact that McCoy is simply a handful for opposing defenses, running and receiving the ball.
Last season, McCoy rushed for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns, as well as catching a whopping 78 balls for 592 yards and two touchdowns.
McCoy, already a star, is poised to join the elite of the league.
2. Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders
4 of 5Darren McFadden finally broke out last season after two injury-riddled seasons with the Oakland Raiders.
Now in his fourth year and healthy, McFadden looked absolutely explosive against the Broncos in Denver in Week 1, slicing and dicing his ways to 150 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Last season, McFadden rushed 223 times for 1,157 yards and seven touchdowns, an average of 5.2 yards per carry. He also added 47 receptions for 507 yards and three touchdowns.
And for those worried about him not scoring a touchdown in Week 1, he came about an inch away in Week 1. Don't worry, McFadden is poised for a monster year in the Raiders' run-heavy offensive gameplan.
1. Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
5 of 5Last season, Jamaal Charles, in limited work, scored the third-most points among running backs in fantasy football, per Yahoo! Sports leagues.
You could already make the case that Charles is a superstar, but his numbers this season should be even better than last year's. By the way, last year, Charles rushed for over 1,400 yards and five touchdowns, and caught 45 balls for 468 yards and three touchdowns.
I know he didn't have a very good game against the Buffalo Bills, or many opportunities (10 rushes, 56 yards), but he did score a receiving touchdown, and I wouldn't read into his Week 1 numbers too much.
The fact of the matter is this kid's one of the most explosive running backs in the league and he's going to get more work this season. If there is a fantasy owner actually down on Charles after one game, make sure you trade for him and watch him blossom. He's the next superstar in fantasy football.
