Manchester United News: Benfica About to Taste Defeat at Hands of Red-Hot Devils

Gabe ZaldivarJun 1, 2018

Benfica is about to receive an unwanted visitor to their grounds. Manchester United opens group play in the Champions League in what should be a quick dismissal of the Portuguese side.

Manchester United is a fierce side that employs a roster that is both hungry and poised. If you are looking for perfection in a football club, one cannot be found.

However, United are the closest you will get when their stars are in top form, and currently, they are. We are in the midst of a grand time at Old Trafford. When Sir Alex Ferguson is busy comparing Wayne Rooney to Pele, you know that the times are good.

The Red Devils have steamrolled through the EPL, notching such gaudy results as 8-2 to Arsenal and 5-0 to Bolton. The comparison to Pele may not be far off. In the last couple of weeks, Rooney has collected goals at an amazing rate.

To illustrate how deep a side this is, stars Nemaja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have been slow to return. There is no need to push them to get back to form when United is on such a roll.

ESPN reports Ferdinand will not travel to Portugal to play Benfica. He will instead stay home for the club's upcoming clash with tables setters, Chelsea

You can bet that Sir Alex Ferguson has the fixture with Chelsea in the back of his mind, but it doesn't trouble him. Not because he is overlooking the Blues, but because the focus of this season has been on the Champions League.

The Red Devils met up with Barcelona in the final last season, only to come up short in the end. Fergie has gone to great lengths to ensure that doesn't happen again. He brought in a goalie that should soon establish himself as a world class keeper.

The addition of Ashley Young has been vital to opening the pitch for the United attack. The only real worry is that United may be peaking much to early.

Fergie can worry about that later. For now, it is time to sit back and enjoy the rare sight of a football club that is simply unbeatable at the moment.
