Boston Red Sox: Tim Wakefield Finally Gets 200th Win in Blowout

Sean O'NeilSep 13, 2011

The wait is finally over!

Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox got his 200th career win Tuesday night in an 18-6 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.

I had the pleasure of getting a last minute offer to attend the game, and when I heard that Wakefield was pitching, I had to go as I knew that there was strong potential that this could be a historic night.

Since winning his 199th career game, Wakefield started eight games and came out winless in all eight of them. Granted, not all of the losses and no-decisions were his fault, as Boston's bullpen failed him on multiple occasions.

But finally, on his ninth start since his last win, Wakefield became the 89th pitcher in the modern era to get 200 career wins. The old man is 45 years old and has been a part of the MLB for 19 seasons—the knuckleballer deserved to get to 200.

The game started out rough for the Sox, when they were down 5-4 after three innings. Jose Bautista hit an absolute blast which hit the top of the left-field foul pole and bounced halfway back towards the infield.

It seemed as if Wakefield was going to miss out on 200 for a ninth straight game, but then the Red Sox offense took flight.

In the last five innings, Boston's offense scored 14 runs which included an opposite-field home run from Jacoby Ellsbury who also had three RBI and four runs on the night. Dustin Pedroia added two more home runs that each ripped over the Green Monster in left field.

The Red Sox made sure that their knuckleball specialist got his win tonight and they did it in electrifying fashion.

Maybe this can be a boost for Boston in the future. And once again, congratulations to Timmy Wakefield on win No. 200. You deserve it.
