WWE: Night of Champions Will Determine the Fate of CM Punk

Imaan JalaliSep 13, 2011

This past Monday night on RAW, CM Punk and HHH ended the show with a war of words bordering on too-insider and was chock-full of arguments that mostly rang hollow. As a perpetual circular back-and-forth rant painted CM Punk as the very average-sized built wrestler who defied the odds, despite a lack of opportunities, to enter a domain where very few have had the privilege of being in.

As far as HHH was concerned, CM Punk's words were indicative of someone who is prone to making excuses, whereas CM Punk felt he was justified in trying to eradicate the exceptions to the rule so everyone, of all shapes and sizes, not just bodybuilders, can rise to the top.

In a crescendo that nearly broke the fourth wall, CM Punk and HHH momentarily became Phil Brooks and Paul Levesque, respectively. A scripted show suddenly became purportedly real sparked by supposed real life animosity between two central figures that stand for very different things. On one side, you have the firmly entrenched, now corporate wrestler who has surpassed rebellion and become a vanguard of the status-quo.

On the other hand, you have the self-proclaimed "best in the world" who wants the fans voices to be heard—and responded to. He epitomizes the "anyone can be a wrestler" image, someone like Mick Foley before him, who was just as much of a fanatic as the current spectators who sit in the stands and cheer their heroes.

The question becomes if Punk can become the hero he once lionized and now aspires to be, leading a changing of the guard, being able to back up his words against the juggernaut in HHH who stands in his way, a seeming heir to Vince McMahon's antiquated ways.

True to life where art and life imitate each other, it is HHH, or the more apt Paul Levesque, whose very real influence will impact the direction of not only CM Punk but WWE. Time will tell and this Sunday at WWE's Night of Champions, it is the match not for any championship, that will determine the fate of the show.
