Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: 5 Guys Who Would Be a Smart Pickup

jim beamJun 6, 2018

There are still plenty of solid players available on fantasy football waiver wires who had strong performances in Week 1. And now that the first game of the season has been played, you should have a better understanding of who you might want to add to your fantasy roster.

Here are five players who you would be wise to pick up from the waiver wire.

Rex Grossman

1 of 5

The Arizona Cardinals' defense made rookie quarterback Cam Newton look like an All-Pro in Week 1. Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman, who threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns against the New York Giants, should have another fine outing against Arizona.

Although Grossman has played inconsistently throughout his career, starting him against the Cardinals will probably pay dividends.

Ryan Fitzpatrick

2 of 5

Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick began 2011 by throwing for four touchdown passes against the Kansas City Chiefs. Expect him to have another strong performance against the Oakland Raiders in Week 2.

The loss of cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was evident as the Raiders surrendered 304 passing yards to the Denver Broncos on Monday night. That bodes well for Fitzpatrick.

Darren Sproles

3 of 5

New Orleans Saints running back Darren Sproles was a versatile threat for the Saints in Week 1 and should thrive in his role as a replacement for Reggie Bush.

Sproles will be utilized in the Saints pass-heavy offense and can contribute as a returner if your league rewards special teams plays.

Ben Tate

4 of 5

Houston Texans running back Ben Tate figures to have another strong day rushing when the Texans play the Miami Dolphins in Week 2. Tate, who ran for 116 yards on 24 carries, will become the focal point of the Texans offense while Arian Foster is out.

Don't expect quarterback Matt Schaub to challenge the Dolphins' talented secondary too much. Instead, he will rely on Tate and the Houston ground attack to carry the offense.

Devery Henderson

5 of 5

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Devery Henderson is a solid option who figures to see plenty of passes come his way while Lance Moore and Marques Colston recover from injuries.

Henderson had six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown against Green Bay's strong defense. He should do well even against the Chicago Bears in Week 2. If you have Henderson you should plan on keeping him for a while as his numbers will continue to improve against weaker opponents.
