Detroit Lions: Why Calvin Johnson Will Lead the NFL in Touchdown Receptions

Nick KostoraSep 13, 2011

In Week 1, Calvin Johnson had six catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. He dominated the Buccaneers' secondary, specifically the talented cornerback Aqib Talib.

Aside from being one of the most talented and physically gifted players in the NFL, Johnson is also in a position this season to catch more touchdowns than any other player.

Last year, with an assortment of quarterbacks running the Lions offense, Johnson still managed to bring in 12 touchdowns (13 if you count his controversial grab in Week 1 against Chicago).

This season, if all goes according to plan, he will have Matthew Stafford throwing him the ball for 16 games. The benefits from having a consistent player at quarterback are obvious and numerous, including better timing, chemistry and trust.

Couple this with the fact that Stafford has showcased great ability at the quarterback position when healthy and you have a real recipe for success.

Nate Burleson is a great complimentary receiver and in the offseason, the Lions drafted speedy slot man Titus Young. These may not be elite playmakers like Johnson, but having them on the field will at least force defenses to respect them.

Johnson will still demand the occasional double team. He is simply too physically dominant not to do so, but he should have enough chances against single coverage to find the end zone all season.

The Lions also avoid most of the league's top secondaries this year, which will only give Johnson more reason to put six points on the board.

Obviously there are other great receivers in the NFL. Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Jennings and any number of other wideouts are capable of having the most touchdown receptions in the 2011 season. However, it appears Calvin Johnson is in the best position to do so.
