Sidney Rice Injury: Should You Start the Seahawks WR in Fantasy Football Week 2?

Ryan PhillipsSep 13, 2011

Sidney Rice signed a big five-year, $41 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason and was expected to come in and be the team's No. 1 wide receiver from the get go. Well, Week 1 came and went without Rice making his Seahawks regular season debut because of a shoulder injury, and he may not be back for a while.

Rice was inactive during Seattle's 33-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. As of today, the Seahawks haven't revealed the extent of Rice's injury and they are reportedly in "wait and see" mode on his return.

As of now, Rice is a bad play in any fantasy league. He's hurt and his quarterback is the wildly inconsistent Tarvaris Jackson. Rice's shoulder will hinder his effectiveness until he's back to 100 percent even if he does play. The fact that he's still out without any positive updates means he's likely not going to return in Week 2.

Even if Rice does come back this week, it's probably a good idea to avoid anyone on Seattle's offense right now. Jackson finished Sunday's loss completing 21 of 37 passes for 197 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. His quarterback rating on the day was 78.3. That's about what you should expect out of him, and Rice will suffer as a result when he is healthy.

The Seahawks gained just 219 yards of total offense against the 49ers, who were not expected to have a stout defense. Which is, again, more evidence that you should avoid playing anyone on Seattle's offense—including Rice—for the time being.
