Pro Wrestling Fans Unite! Demand That the Heel Manager Make a Comeback!

Justin EldridgeSep 14, 2011

Something has been missing in the WWE for quite some time now. A character that we love to hate, and one we hate to love: the heel manager.

I, for one, love a manager character on screen. Bobby Heenan, Slick, Sunny, Colonel Parker, and Mr. Fuji all have something in common. Their devious tactics led to their clients winning many, many matches and we hated them for it. We hated their clients for it, and it made it much more satisfactory when the good guy finally overcame the odds of being outnumbered to finally win. Other than the devious tactics that come with having a manager, a character that isn't great on the microphone can have a manager speak for them until they develop better microphone skills, or if the character is like the Kane of old, they are a mute monster and the manager does the talking completely for them.

It has become a lost art in the professional wrestling world, and I would love to see it return. Vickie Guerrero is doing an amazing job of bringing it back, although the storyline she is involved with is kind of crappy. Just let her have a stable of wrestlers like JJ Dillon or Bobby Heenan without the infighting. I was getting excited when Swagger approached her to think about taking on more than one client, but that quickly dissolved when the animosity between Ziggler and Swagger started almost instantaneously afterwards. I usually reserve judgement on an angle and let it play out but this started to have that nostalgic feel to it and I was pretty ticked off when it started playing out the way it did.

Michael Cole would be a great heel manager as well. His announce work is too over the top for him to be a credible announcer, but his tactics would parlay quite nicely into managing a wrestler, which I thought was going to happen with Jack Swagger.

Imagine the heights that guys in the WWE like Tyson Kidd, Drew McIntyre, Tyler Reks, David Otunga, Mike McGillicutty and Heath Slater would reach if they had managers by their side to get them over. I feel this would benefit the WWE as a whole due to the fact that with heels like these guys being so hated in part of their managers, any babyface that feuded with them would have no problem getting over in the eyes of the fans.

If you are a wrestling fan over the age of 20, think back to the heels you loved to hate, and see how many of them had managers.  You just might be surprised at how many there actually were.

Thanks for Reading.
