Boise State Football: Broncos Need Georgia Bulldogs to Start Winning

Alex KaySep 13, 2011

The Boise State Broncos' chance at becoming the first "mid-major" to compete in a BCS-era National Championship Game largely hinges on the success of the Georgia Bulldogs.

If the Bulldogs continue their slide, as they are 0-2 now against the Broncos and the South Carolina Gamecocks, the voters in the polls will not respect the Broncos as much.

Boise has a relatively easy schedule, with the only currently-ranked team left to play being the TCU Horned Frogs on November 12th.

Last season, Boise opened against No. 10 Virginia Tech and also got a win against ranked Oregon State in Week 3. They suffered an unfortunate overtime defeat to No. 19 Nevada in the second-to-last week of the season and ruined their chances to compete in a BCS Bowl.

With an easier schedule this season, they need TCU to stay in the rankings and Georgia to move back in with some solid victories to have BCS hopes.

They also could heavily benefit from Oklahoma losing and the winner of LSU vs. Alabama suffering a late-season loss as well.

Even if they run the table, the Broncos will have a very hard time convincing those who vote in the polls that they deserve to be ranked No. 1 or 2 with easy victories over such weak opponents.

If Georgia were able to beat South Carolina in Week 2, it would have done wonders for Boise’s BCS chances.

Now they have to hope that the Bulldogs can beat ranked teams like Mississippi State, Florida and Auburn, as well as some of their other tough SEC matchups.

What was originally an impressive two-touchdown win over Georgia can still be salvaged if they turn out to be a legitimate team that just faltered in their opening two games.

They played No. 12 South Carolina very tight. Had it gone the other way, Boise would be getting more respect right now.

For those hoping that a mid-major gets a chance to shock the world and make it to the National Title game, you had better start rooting for the Bulldogs.
