Breaking News: Boston Bruins' Marc Savard Will Have His Name on Stanley Cup

Cory DuceyJun 2, 2018

During the State of the Bruins address, general manager Peter Chiarelli has announced center Marc Savard will have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup.

"Marc will be on the Cup," Chiarelli said.

The announcement was greeted with applause and cheering from more than 2,000 fans, which comprised of a sea of black- and gold-clad season ticket-holders, Premium Club box owners and their families who reveled in the Bruins’ 2011 success at the TD Garden.

The automatic nod would be for a player to play a minimum of 41 regular season games or one appearance in the Stanley Cup finals in one season.

Savard only played 25 games in the regular season due to getting back into playing late after a severe concussion at the hands of Pittsburgh Penguins Matt Cooke and a followup hit by former teammate Colorado Avalanche Matt Hunwick that seemed to aggravate the injury.

To circumvent this criteria, a team can petition the league to have a players name added to the list of names that will be engraved under extenuating circumstances.

Savard is a very good player and was one of the keys to getting the team back on track to get the Cup.  However, with Savard still experiencing post-concussion syndrome, it's unlikely he will play in 2012 and his career may be over.

With his hockey vision, the uncanny ways he can setup the plays and his popularity in the locker room, he will be missed by his teammates.

"It's tough to hear, obviously," Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron said. "He's one of your friends and you want him to do well and come back at 100 percent. I'm happy they're doing that, not risking his health. That said, it's sad to see."

Chiarelli also noted that Savard is not in a good situation right now as there had been little to no improvement in his condition.

"He's not in a good spot still. He still has recurring headaches; he still has post-concussion stuff," Chiarelli said. "He's not playing this year. Frankly, I don't think he'll play again. That's my opinion, my layperson's opinion."

Latest report that Shane Hnidy or Steve Kampfer will not get to have their names on the Cup.

This is Cory Ducey saying, "Congratulations, Marc.  Well deserved and I hope your health comes back in fine form.  If we see you again on the ice, we will cheer for you.  If not, we will still cheer, wish you well and cherish the time you spent as a member of the Boston Bruins roster."
