Strangest Headline Ever: The Vols Hope To UPSET Vanderbilt
The Vanderbilt Commodores have defeated the Tennessee Vols twice in my lifetime. The first time, I was 10 months old. That 1982 Vanderbilt team was the last to go to a Bowl Game and arguably the best Vandy team ever.
The last time Vandy beat Tennessee was in 2005 at Knoxville. That one I actually remember.
The 2005 season for the Vols was less than spectacular to say the least. That loss to Vanderbilt sent Tennessee to its first under .500 season in 17 years.
When you realize that UT was picked as high as No. 2 in the nation in the preseason you realize how much that one hurt.
Here we are in 2008. This was supposed to be a pretty good year yet again. Coming off of an SEC East Championship in 2007 the Vols were supposed to surprise people with a new offense and a new QB.
As you can clearly tell neither of those prospects worked out to well.
There are two weeks left in this 2008 season. What will the Vols do? Will Fulmer and the gang 'mail it in' again this week. Do they even care any more?
I'd say, just for pride's sake, Fulmer wants to win these next two. But he sure didn't show it by making Jonathan Crompton the starter in today's game.
Crompton has been entirely ineffective all season. Sure he had that last minute drive against UCLA to put the Vols in position to tie. But had he been able to move the offense at all, after the defense handed him four first-half interceptions, the game would have been well out of reach before halftime.
There is talk that BJ Coleman will play. A lot of Volniacs have been screaming for this since Stephens and Crompton have made a mockery of the QB position this season.
Let's just hope someone can lead these Vols to an upset win... over Vandy.
Wow, I never thought I'd utter those words in my lifetime.
