Arsenal News: Gunners Won't Overcome Mental Woes This Year

Brandon GalvinSep 12, 2011

The Arsenal Gunners will not overcome Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United Red Devils or Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool Reds in the table chase.

The Gunners are not mentally tough enough to overcome their woes against these two overpowering clubs.

Even worse, they may not have the talent to make it close down the stretch.

After making great strides to improve the club before the transfer window expired, the Gunners are still stuck in place.

They acquired talent, but they needed to land a gritty veteran that can bring out the best this club has to offer. Who is going to be that man to step up and guide the Gunners to the Promised Land?

"

“A shaky win over a Swansea side full of finesse but no finish simply showed how much work remains to be done for Arsenal, how much they miss the brio of Jack Wilshere, how confidence can ebb suddenly and how far they are behind the might of Manchester…

Even after this win, Wenger understands that nerves continue to jangle. A bright start by Mikel Arteta and company was not maintained…

Arsenal were rattled, needing a calming influence.

"We have six or seven who are captains of national teams so I don’t know why we shouldn’t have enough leaders,’ countered [Arsène] Wenger. Few would mistake Yossi Benayoun for Tony Adams though…

"We would have loved to give an emphatic win back to the fans especially after what happened at Old Trafford but it doesn’t happen on command,’ added Wenger. ‘You just have to fight your way back.’

Asked how long it will take to recover confidence, Wenger replied, "It’s all right now."

"It’s not yet,” according to The Telegraph’s Henry Winter.

"

The Gunners desperately need somebody to take this team by the horns and drive them to succeed. Somebody, anybody, needs to step up and send a jolt through this club. They need to increase the intensity and are yearning for somebody to lead the charge.

This team is void of intensity and confidence. One would think they would have the integrity to stand up in the face of this adversity and buckle down, but it’s not looking good. This all harps back to mental toughness.

We have to question this club’s state of mind heading into every match. We have to question whether they can get the job done when it matters most. With a host of talented players, it should come easy.

Unfortunately, talent does not always prevail.

Until the Gunners bring the intensity this roster suggests they can, they won’t succeed. Even worse, they might fade back into the shadows entirely.
