Oklahoma Pac-12: Conference Shift Would Further Dilute College Football's Aura

Donald WoodSep 12, 2011

College football has grown to the level of popularity it has in the United States because of its history and legacy.

That is all being ruined by the conference swapping that has become the norm for the sport.

Recent talk of Texas A&M leaving for the SEC was just the latest chatter that had a big-time program switching conferences, but that may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Orangebloods.com is reporting on a possible departure for the Oklahoma Sooners from the Big 12 to the Pac 12:

"

Oklahoma will apply for membership to the Pac-12 before the end of the month, and Oklahoma State is expected to follow suit, a source close to OU's administration told Orangebloods.com. Even though Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said Friday the Pac-12 was not interested in expansion at this time, OU's board of regents is fed up with the instability in the Big 12, the source said. The OU board of regents will meet within two weeks to formalize plans to apply for membership to the Pac-12, the source said.

"

If people thought Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State and Kansas thought it was detrimental to the conference if Texas A&M left, imagine their surprise when Oklahoma gets up to leave for the Pac 12.

Oklahoma and Texas are the reason that the Big 12 is relevant, and if Oklahoma left, Texas wouldn’t be far behind them. That would be the death of the Big 12 and the opening of Pandora’s Box for college football.

If they don’t put a stop to the constant landscape shift, the college football product will become nothing but a NFL minor league system that cares more about the money than their school’s legacy.

There used to be pride in your school and your conference, and the healthy competition between universities every season was the thing that made feuds and rivalries what college football was about.

Now that teams are moving halfway across the country just to be in a bigger conference, the feuds feel forced and the same aura that surrounded college football just isn’t as bright.
