Breaking News: Ryan Callahan Named New Rangers Captain, Richards Named Alternate

Well, boys and girls, here you are—The Rangers announced this Monday morning that Ryan Callahan is the new captain of the team, becoming the 26th captain in franchise history.

Ryan Callahan was considered the favorite to inherit the captaincy from departing captain Chris Drury. It is now official.

Ryan Callahan becomes the first homegrown player since Brian Leetch to wear the "C."

It had been speculated that it was a toss-up between Callahan and Richards, but in the end it seems that Callahan's value and past contributions to the team gave him an edge.

Brad Richards, however, will sport an Alternate's "A" on his jersey this season.

Richards can serve as a veteran leader in this role. He has past experience, he is familiar with head coach John Tortorella and he will be an invaluable sounding board for young players. Marc Staal will also continue to serve as an alternate captain next season.

These choices make a lot of sense. Callahan inherits the role that was rightfully his and Brad Richards is recognized with the letter he deserves. Callahan embodies what it truly means to be a Ranger.

Callahan also scored a career-high 23 goals last season, despite being limited to only 60 games with a broken hand and broken ankle late in the season.

Rangers general manager Glen Sather had this to say about Callahan:
