John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio: The Back-Burner Feud That Should Be Up Front

Justin EldridgeSep 12, 2011

I can't believe that I'm actually going to say this, as I am just as tired of seeing John Cena in the title picture as everybody else, but I think this should be the No. 1 story on Monday Night Raw at the moment and not CM Punk vs. Triple H.

As huge of a fan as I am of the latter two, and as interested as I am in the eventual payoff of their angle (I think there is more to it than Nash texted Nash), to make both the championship and the champion mean something, the heavyweight title should always be the focus of the show.

Titles have lost almost all meaning in the WWE, and they need to be rebuilt to what everyone strives for in the company. Even though Alberto Del Rio has been on a tear defending his title, and making himself look like a strong champion compared to the usual heel champs, he has been overshadowed since his title reign began.

Some of this has to do with him being stuck in a bit of a holding pattern with his character since he won the title, but Cena has buried him numerous times and now that Triple H is back on TV, he has to be the main focus as per normal.

I get that they are developing him as the new COO, and I get that he is putting over Punk to make him a bigger star, but Cena and Del Rio need to be able to do the same. If Del Rio goes over at Night of Champions, it will do volumes for his career.

Cena has had some of his best matches recently with Punk, and allowing him to go over escalated Punk's stock greatly within WWE.

Alberto Del Rio has the ability and talent to put on a 5-star quality match with Cena and the company needs to realize this.

By Del Rio winning at Night of Champions, WWE will accomplish two things: 1) Del Rio will finally look like a credible champion and 2) Cena will look like he's vulnerable for once which will create some doubt in his matches as to who is going to win.

Both of these will create some renewed interest in both characters, and will breathe some new life into Cena's character, which has become stale much like Hulk Hogan did in the 80's. I'm not saying turn Cena's heel, but at least make him work for awhile at getting the title back.

WWE, please put over Del Rio more than you have lately, and please make your titles mean something again. If you do, the rewards you reap will be immense.
