Atlanta Falcons Player Evaluations After Week 1

Frank SpartiJun 7, 2018

After watching the Atlanta Falcons beat themselves last Sunday, I think it's time to offer up a damage control assessment. Sometimes the most obvious things are overlooked because a coach is holding out hope or he believes he will prove he is right.

The only good news is that the Falcons are no worse off than last year when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat them in the opening game without their starting quarterback.

Maybe, just maybe, changes will be made, but I for one, believe that there are too many inferior players that are getting too many chances to "do their job."

It's not Joe Hawley's fault that he is not in Todd McClure's league. Maybe he will do better.   However, it is Thomas DeCoud's fault that he can't catch. He missed at least two "gift" interceptions that could have changed the game.

Then there is the lazy tackling. What is that about and why do the coaches permit this? The most notable lack of technique was demonstrated when Sean Weatherspoon touched Matt Forte hoping he would fall down. This was only one of multiple exasperating whiffs on Sunday.

Finally, it has to be said, Dunta Robinson is a poor cornerback with many faults. I think he could make a decent safety, replacing DeCoud. Also, Brent Grimes is trying to jump every route so he can accumulate interceptions and get a big contract next year. Too bad this hurts the team more than it helps. Don't even get me started with Chris Owens. Come on man!

Matt Ryan did pretty good while running for his life. The only thing I can say is, throw it to Roddy White and Julio Jones even if the are covered. At least they will have a chance to get big gains and quick scores. White, Jones, Tony Gonzalez and Harry Douglas are all looking great.

Please, don't give the ball to your smallest player (twice) at the goal line. Maybe the coaches will quit outsmarting themselves.

I like the Falcons' chances, but I just wanted to mention the obvious in the hope that something gets improved.
