Fantasy Football Week 2 Projections: 3 Week 1 Studs to Ride to Championship

Joseph HealySep 12, 2011

Just as often as a Week 1 stud turns out to be a bust, a Week 1 stud shows that his great performance in the opening week was just the start of a great season.

For a shining example, look at Arian Foster just last year. He rushed for over 200 yards in the first week of the season on the way to a great season. The following are three Week 1 studs that will continue to have success.

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

Newton surprised many by having the best week of any quarterback in football in Week 1. He threw for 422 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score.

You can't expect that he'll put up similar stats in the coming weeks, but as he gets more comfortable in the offense, top-flight performances will become the norm.

I suspect that Cam Newton will be owned in just about every league after his breakout game this week. If he isn't owned in your league yet, don't hesitate to get him on your roster.

Kenny Britt, Tennessee Titans

If Britt can stay out of trouble and on the field, he will be a steal at the wide receiver position. He isn't among the elite at the position, but he has little competition for catches in Tennessee.

His line of 136 yards receiving and two touchdowns might be a little more than you can ask on a week-to-week basis, but I wouldn't expect it to vary much as long as he is the only receiving show in town.

His value will drop if the Titans ever turn the offense over to Jake Locker, but again, as the only real receiving threat in that offense, his value can't drop all that far.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills

The Ryan Fitzpatrick bandwagon that I had been driving all preseason just got a lot more crowded. In Week 1, Fitzpatrick completed 17 of 25 passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns.

Obviously, four touchdowns isn't going to happen every week, but the completion percentage and yardage marks will be the norm.

Fitzpatrick will end the season among the top eight or 10 quarterbacks in the league. Fitzpatrick is relishing his role as the unquestioned starter in Buffalo, and Stevie Johnson, his favorite receiver, is emerging as one of the top receivers in the entire league.
