Cam Newton: Forecasting Newton's Fantasy Production in the Next 15 Games

David DanielsJun 7, 2018

Cam Newton played like Auburn was paying him against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. No rookie quarterback had ever thrown for 400 yards in his debut, but Newton threw for 422 yards and added two touchdowns through the air and one the ground.

Fantasy football players are scrambling to pick up the former Auburn Tiger because wins and losses mean nothing to them, but they’re drooling over those numbers.

Not so fast; don’t believe the hype. Here is a forecast of Newton’s fantasy production the rest of the season.

Week 2 vs. Packers: Eight points

Newton isn’t Drew Brees, so don’t expect the Heisman Trophy winner to shred the Green Bay Packers secondary. He should put together a few good drives, but he’ll throw multiple interceptions.

Week 3 vs. Jaguars: 21 points

Jacksonville’s secondary is pretty bad. Its most talented cornerback, Rashean Mathis, looked horrible against the Tennessee Titans.

Week 4 vs. Bears: Seven points

The Chicago Bears defense will eat the inexperienced Newton alive. If they forced three turnovers vs. Matt Ryan and company, then Newton’s bound to cough up multiple turnovers as well.

Week 5 vs. Saints: 10 points

Newton isn’t Aaron Rodgers, and he doesn’t have Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Jermichael Finley, Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb to throw to either. New Orleans' pass rush will be overwhelming.

Week 6 vs. Falcons: 12 points

Atlanta has one of the best cornerback and defensive end duos in the league. The Panthers will be forced to run the football to have success.

Week 7 vs. Redskins: 15 points

Washington’s defense was pretty impressive against the New York Giants in Week 1. If they can equal that success, Newton could struggle to move the football.

Week 8 vs. Vikings: 18 points

Minnesota boasts a great pass rush, but its secondary isn’t very talented. A Jared Allen strip sack won’t take away from a good day through the air for Newton.

Week 10 vs. Titans: 21 points

Tennessee’s defense is one of the worst in the NFL. If DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart don’t steal the spotlight, Newton will put up big numbers.

Week 11 vs. Lions: 16 points

Detroit’s front seven is insane, but its secondary is mediocre. Newton will get forced into a turnover or two, but he’ll put up solid numbers.

Week 12 vs. Colts: 22 points

Indianapolis may have one of the worst teams in the league without Peyton Manning. Newton will have to avoid Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, but he should have some success.

Week 13 vs. Buccaneers: 17 points

Matt Stafford shredded Tampa Bay’s defense, but Newton won’t be able to equal his numbers. Still, he’ll be able to move the football.

Week 14 vs. Falcons: 11 points

It will be easier for defenses the second time they face Newton: the more film the better.

Week 15 vs. Texans: 17 points

Houston shut down the Peyton Manning-less Colts, but that’s not saying much. Its secondary is still vulnerable, and Newton will take advantage.

Week 16 vs. Buccaneers: 15 points

The same thing as the Atlanta Falcons—experience benefits the defense vs. a rookie quarterback.

Week 17 vs. Saints: Eight points

Another divisional opponent; Newton will be under pressure all day long.
