English Premier League: Why Sergio Aguero Will Win the Golden Boot This Season

Rohan SubraJun 6, 2018

When you ponder over who will win the EPL Golden Boot, the first people who pop into your mind are surely Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba, Luis Suarez and Robin van Persie.

But, for this year, I have a completely different prediction.

Roberto Mancini bought Argentine starlet Sergio Aguero in the summer transfer window, for the huge sum of £38 million. Given the price, it's obvious that expectations were high regarding his ability, but the former Atletico Madrid player would have to work hard to justify such a fee.

Despite the fact that the EPL season is only four games in, it's safe to say that, so far, Aguero has done exactly that.

With a double against Swansea, one against Tottenham and a hat-trick against Wigan, "Kun" is tied for second place in goals scored.

Wayne Rooney, who scored one at West Brom, one against Tottenham, three against Arsenal and three at Bolton, is in first place and looking in fine form.

The other man in second place is Aguero's teammate Edin Dzeko, whose high tally is due to his four-goal performance at White Hart Lane.

Though these two players seem like major obstacles to Aguero, here is why the Argentine will get more than each one:

He will score more than Rooney simply because of his teammates. While Rooney has Young, Nani, Ji-Sung Park, Berbatov, Chicharito and others, Manchester City has many more players to help Aguero get goals: Nasri, Dzeko, Tevez, Silva, Toure, Barry and more.

Some of those other players will grab goals, but Aguero and Rooney will be the main scorers for City and United respectively.

The reason why he will get more goals than Dzeko is simply because Mancini has shown doubts about starting the Bosnian. In their last match against Wigan, the Italian manager started Tevez over Dzeko, and didn't even substitute in the latter.

Of course there are many, many more players who could possibly challenge for the Golden Boot race, but it seems unlikely that anyone who is not Rooney or Aguero will win it.

Aguero is even saying that he wants to be compared to Argentine legend Diego Maradona. A report from ESPN Soccernet quotes Aguero:

"

"I hope I can help Manchester City do great things like Diego did with Napoli. I'm coming here to help the team develop and win titles, and if we can do that this year, it will be perfect. But we'll keep on trying to get better and better and I hope to play a big part in that."

"

Aguero's task, however, is not going to be easy. Though it's difficult to score many goals in the first few matches of a season, maintaining that form throughout the season is much, much harder. (That is one thing that Rooney can be very good at.)

Sergio's success will not only be in the Premier League, I think it can extend to the Champions League as well. Since this is Manchester City's first ever Champions League appearance, fans will be hoping for some beginner's luck, and this could lead to Aguero scoring a few goals.

Aguero will be focusing more on team achievements than individual ones, as indicated by the quote above.

But it never hurts to score.
