After Steven Jackson, Sam Bradford Injuries, Is the St. Louis Rams Doomed?

Andrea HangstSep 11, 2011

The St. Louis Rams lost two of their most important players in their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Sam Bradford suffered an injury to a finger on his right hand, and is undergoing x-rays, and running back Steven Jackson succumbed to a quad strain in the first half.

Without their two biggest offensive playmakers, the Rams are in definite trouble. Each game either Bradford or Jackson misses is an exponential increase in the chances the Rams will lose; without both of them, the Rams sink to one of the more troubled teams in the league.

As of now, Bradford's injury appears to be the most serious. Though x-rays were negative, there is theh possibility of nerve damage and a MRI has been scheduled.

If Bradford is unable to use his throwing hand, then he will be likely unable to take the field in the Rams' Week 2 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, leaving the offense in the hands of backup A.J. Feeley.

This should be less of an issue for the team if Jackson is available to start next Sunday. The team can then focus on their running game, putting less pressure on Feeley to lead the team in yardage.

However, if Jackson's quad injury is more serious than it initially seemed and he is unable to play in Week 2, then the Rams are going to be hard-pressed to come up with significant offensive production against a Titans team playing solid defense.

Either way, neither Jackson nor Bradford are players St. Louis can do without, whether in the short or long term. Missing them for even a week will have a significant impact on the Rams' chances to reach the postseason.

Very few teams can perform well while losing both of their biggest offensive starters, and the Rams are no different. Cadillac Williams can fill Jackson's shoes to an extent, but Feeley is no comparison to Bradford.

With both Williams and Feeley responsible for the team's scoring, it's going to be a rough go for the NFC West favorites.
