Chicago Blackhawks: Saad, Hayes Each Tally Pair of Goals in Loss to Sens Rookies

Jon FromiJun 4, 2018

The Chicago Blackhawks dropped another game in Toronto's Rookie Tournament Sunday afternoon, coming out on the short end of a 5-6 decision to Ottawa.

2011 second-round pick Brandon Saad had another impressive game with two goals and an assist.

Also getting two goals for the Blackhawks squad was 6'5" forward Jimmy Hayes, who was obtained from Toronto on draft day in 2010.

Peter LeBlanc, who is under an AHL contract with Rockford, opened the scoring for the 'Hawks with an opportunist goal to tie the game after the Senators took a 1-0 lead.

Nick Mattison was slow to get back to the net, leading to a short-handed Senators goal, but Saad swooped in to knock in a loose puck to tie the contest at 2-2. A second goal, this time from his knees in front of the net, gave his team a 3-2 advantage.

Stephane Da Costa changed Ottawa's fortunes with a hat trick in the first 10 minutes of the second period, giving the Senators a lead they would never lose.

'Hawks 2011 first-rounder Phillip Danault was a few teeth lighter after taking a high stick in the second period, but returned to action in the third. Hayes, who was the game's second star, added a goal in both the second and third periods, but it wasn't enough.

Absent for the second straight game from the Chicago lineup was Jeremy Morin, who was expected to see his first action in eight months this weekend.

The 'Hawks rookies finish up their part of the tournament Tuesday night with a game against Pittsburgh's top prospects.
