NFL Scores Week 1: Steven Jackson Has St. Louis Rams off to Hot Start

Andrew GardaJun 7, 2018

Three things we were pretty sure about coming into this game:

The Eagles' offensive line was worrisome.

As was the middle of the defense.

The Rams weren't going to be as good as last year.

Two out of three ain't bad. Thanks for nothing, Steven Jackson.

Jackson kicked things off for the Rams' offense with a 47-yard touchdown on the very first play of the game. On that play, Jackson took the handoff from quarterback Sam Bradford and ran through a tremendous hole opened up by the offensive line. It was off to the races after that, as there was nobody to stop Jackson in the middle of the field.

Touchdown, Rams.

The play was set up by a Michael Vick fumble on the Eagles' first drive. Vick has been under constant pressure throughout the 1st quarter, though they were able to move the ball well in their second drive. At the end of it, Vick hooked up with running back LeSean McCoy for a touchdown.

The problem many perceive with the Eagles is a lack of size and experience in the middle of the defense, especially in the linebacker corps. Rookie Casey Matthews did not look good in preseason action but the Eagles refused to bring in a veteran.

The Eagles are shaky on the offensive line as well, a huge problem given Vick's injury history. The team has to keep Vick upright and so far it doesn't look like they're well able to do so.

Steven Jackson had headed to the locker room after his score, returning and taking up residence on a bike. He is reportedly fighting a right quad muscle injury. It's unknown how long this will keep him out.

Meanwhile, Carnell Williams is filling in effectively. He has been running the same play Jackson scored on—that shift left—and the Eagles have no answer for it right now.

The score is currently 14-7 in favor of the Eagles, as Sam Bradford just fumbled an exchange and the ball was run back by Juqua Parker for a touchdown.
