Strikeforce Grand Prix Results Video: Daniel Cormier Says He'd Fight Jon Jones

Sean SmithJun 5, 2018

With a first-round knockout win against Antonio Silva, former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier moved one step closer to the top of the heavyweight division in MMA. With a win over Josh Barnett in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix finals, some could consider Cormier the top heavyweight outside of the UFC.

If the UFC does come calling in the future, Cormier told MMAFighting he would prefer dropping to light heavyweight for a fight with Jon Jones over a matchup against American Kickboxing Academy teammate and UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

"To be honest with you, I would much rather go down to 205 and fight Jon Jones or whoever is the light heavyweight champion," Cormier said.

Obviously, there are still a lot of ifs standing between Cormier and a UFC title shot, but it appears the world-class wrestler already has his sights set on joining Velasquez as a UFC champion. At 32 years old, with the talent he possesses, there's no reason why he shouldn't be trying to rush things along.
