South Carolina Football: The Season Begins "Fo' Real" Against Georgia Today
I woke up this morning at 5 o'clock. My eyes popped open and I sat straight up. I was almost giddy with anticipation.
If you think that I am a 10-year-old on Christmas morning, well, you'd be pretty damn close. I feel that way.
I would bet Leftover Hotdog is up as well.
The Gamecocks kick off the season in earnest today, facing off against their bitter rivals, the Georgia Bulldogs. A team that South Carolina has usually struggled with, regardless of talent and records. Historically, like most other matchups involving South Carolina, it isn't close.
This is possibly one of the most anticipated games in Gamecock history, tied with last years Florida game. You can't tell too much about a team in Week 1, unless they are playing an elite opponent. Coaches hold stuff back, players sit, etc.
We don't know who South Carolina or Georgia truly are yet, but we will know a great deal after today.
I can guarantee all across these two bordering states, fans are up, getting their fan faces on, thinking about 4:30 and watching the clock. This game means the world to both sides.
In the past, Georgia fans and USC fans have not gotten along well. Georgia fans disrespected South Carolina and South Carolina fans hated them for it.
Now, the respect has grown and the fans have had a bit of mutual respect for one another for a while.
Both sides know what this game means, as opposed to one thinking it is a cake walk while the other desperately wants the win.
I can't wait to see this game start.
GOOOOOOOOOO GAMECOCKS!!!
To all the Georgia fans, I won't wish you luck, because that would probably mean a win for you. However, I will say that I hope your players play well, nobody gets hurt and you all have an enjoyable game!
It's great to be a Gamecock—win or lose.
Check out this nice piece from a blog writer named Patrick Davis from his site, Gamecock Business. It is a new site and from his first piece, I can tell he has some writing chops and a passion for the Gamecocks. Check him out.
