Top 5 Packers to Follow on Twitter

Michael DulkaSep 13, 2011

The Green Bay Packers have had plenty of players join Twitter over the last couple years as the social media site has exploded. The Twitter phenomenon has had its advantages and its disadvantages for the Packers.

The use of the site has offered fans an opportunity to interact with players like never before, but has provided an unfiltered outlet for players.

During the lead up to the Super Bowl, Nick Barnett and Jermichael Finley took to Twitter to express their frustration about the Packers decision to not include players on injured reserve in their Super Bowl photo. The media immediately saw the tweets and stories were posted within minutes.

Oppositely, the players' use of the site has offered many positives. Fans have opportunities to discuss anything with players and get behind the scenes looks at the lives of their favorite players.

Here is a list of must-follow players on Twitter.

5. Aaron Rodgers (Offseason Only)

1 of 6

Aaron Rodgers  graces us with his presence on Twitter only during the offseason as to avoid any potential distraction during the regular season.

"If u don't have a sense of humor, or if u take urself too seriously, you probably shouldn't follow me," Rodgers tweeted to his followers. "I quote jack handy, heavyweights...the princess bride, etc."

Rodgers has a great sense of humor on the site and tweets about his different experiences during the offseason and sometimes provides social commentary. He also uses the platform to promote the MACC Fund and his record label.

Rodgers provides insight into the offseason mind of a Super Bowl MVP. Follow Rodgers on Twitter, wait for the random gems from February until July.

"I wish In n Out delivered #doubledoubleanimalstyle"

4. Clay Matthews

2 of 6

Clay Matthews doesn't tweet as much as some of the others, but when he does, most times it is pure gold. One of the best to follow, Matthews' sense of humor is almost incomparable.

Many of Matthews' tweets involve messing with teammates on the Packers or his former teammates from USC. Matthews also tweets about his impressive lion's mane that landed him a deal with Suave.

"Big THANKS to #Suave for taking care of my teammates... Poppin' bottles! #teamplayer http://yfrog.com/khfijeehj"

Following Matthews on Twitter provides insight into the life and mind of "the Bloodline" and how he keeps his sense of humor through the grueling NFL season.

"That moment when you realize you left your per diem on the airplane and the flight attendants are most likely...dining at the conjoining Capital Grille of the Conrad hotel in Indianapolis on your dollar.  #prepositions"

3. Jarius Wynn

3 of 6

Jarius Wynn has improved his Twitter game over the last couple of weeks after joining up with First String PR. Wynn has offered multiple contests, providing fans the opportunity to share pictures, videos and ideas with him to choose from.

In one of his contests, Wynn asked fans to post a picture of the meal they cooked that day on Twitter or his Facebook page. Wynn picked the winners, signed some of his game-worn cleats, and shipped them off to the winning fans.

"[shoutout] too all the great followers old and new I'm glad I can be apart of you guys"

Wynn has worked extremely hard to build a stronger relationship with his fans even giving out his gamertag on Xbox in order to take on some of his fans in a game of Madden.

"I just beat my boy 37 to 35 with the eagles lol he didn't want to see the pack good game @Friar_Faithful"

Follow Wynn for a chance to win some very cool Packers memorabilia and to interact with an up-and-coming player on the team.

2. Jermichael and Courtney Finley

4 of 6

Jermichael Finley has gotten the reputation for never holding back when he has something to say. This is certainly true on Twitter. Finley and his wife, Courtney, offer an unprecedented look into the life of a young NFL couple.

If you intend to follow Jermichael, it is crucial to follow Courtney as well. The two often joke and play with each other on Twitter. On Sept. 10, Courtney sent the following tweet to nearly 8000 followers showing a side of Jermichael that would be otherwise unseen.

"Nighty Night!!! XoX

Often times, Jermichael's tweets are unreadable with poor grammar, but he gets his hilarious messages across easily. Follow Jermichael for a look behind the scenes as he attempts to come back from last season's disappointing year-ending injury.

"O lord. @CourtFinley88 is playing love doctor on twitter. This girl is crazy"

1. Tom Crabtree

5 of 6

If you are a Packers fan on Twitter and you do not follow Tom Crabtree, you are doing it all wrong. This is a guy who understands how to use Twitter and how to interact with fans.

Crabtree is with the same PR group as Jarius Wynn and also engages in contests through the social media sight. He constantly is tweeting with Packers fans about everything from Lady Gaga at the VMAs, to the ESPYs, to Xbox games and college football uniforms.

"Cool thing about Maryland's unis: It looks like a different team is playing Miami each quarter"

Around Christmas time last year, Crabtree hosted a contest asking fans to post Christmas pictures. Instead of choosing only one winner, Crabtree cleaned out his locker and sent signed game-worn cleats and gloves to everybody who sent in pictures.

"Told my wife dinner smells great. Asked her what she's cooking and she said, 'nothing yet, i just have the oven preheating.' #fail"

Honorable Mention: Luke Rodgers

6 of 6

Although he is not on the Packers, the brother of Aaron Rodgers, Luke Rodgers is also a must-follow. Rodgers is always willing to discuss the Packers, fantasy football and anything else.

Luke Rodgers has a similar sense of humor as his little brother, but tweets more frequently than his superstar sibling. He holds nothing back for his over 4,000 followers and anybody is fair-game for Rodgers to poke fun at. Here is one such instance:

"I wonder if when Rex Ryan and Sanchez watch film Rex encourages Mark's 'happy FEET' in the pocket. Maybe even rewinds?? Just a FOOT note."

One of the most impressive things I have seen on Twitter was Luke Rodgers getting followers to enter into a drawing to be part of a Twitter-based fantasy football league. He created a donation page and made anybody who was willing to give to the MACC Fund eligible for the league. Rodgers took the top five donors and then randomly selected the others for the league.

"Tomorrow there will be a random drawing for the remaining 6 spots in this year's Fantasy Football with yours truly. Thanks to everyone who donated to this amazing cause. To date we raised $2985 for the @maccfund and its all bc of your generosity. Good luck to all in the drawing"
