Wozniacki vs. Williams: Score and Recaps of 2011 US Open Tennis Semifinal

Matt FaulconerSep 9, 2011

The two favorites to win the 2011 US Open collide in the semifinal round. Serena Williams has been the odds-on favorite despite her low seed, while Caroline Wozniacki is the No. 1 overall seed, and is looking to win her first grand slam title.

Serena has fought through a brutal schedule that has seen her knock off three straight top-20 seeds en route to the semifinals.

She is much more battle tested than Wozniacki, and has done a lot more during her career. The pressure won't get to her in this match, and she should be very comfortable taking the court against the No. 1 women's player in the world.

On the other hand, Wozniacki is the best defensive player in the game. She hits more balls back to her opponent than any other player in the world, and she is going to make Serena earn the victory. Wozniacki has a solid forehard and backhand, and will hope to force Serena into beating herself.

It won't come easy for the American in this one, and we could have an epic three-setter on our hands on Saturday.

This match will have the aura of a final around it, but unfortunately it will be a semifinal. Both of these women deserve to be playing in the 2011 US Open final, but only one will earn the honor to advance and try to take home the title.

A huge 6-2, 6-4 victory over top seeded Caroline Wozniacki ensured that Serena Williams' Cinderella US Open journey would make it to the finals. The No. 28 seed became the ultimate bracket buster and her victory over Wozniacki proves she is indeed still an elite player in women's tennis.

Williams proved to be more powerful than the worlds top player and cruised to an appearance in the final against all odds. 11 aces and 34 winners speak to just how dominant Williams was in a match that sent her to her 5th US Open final.

This is a huge breakthrough for Williams, not only at this tournament but in general. She was written off by many after such a long medical layoff, but by returning with such ferocity and taking down the top player in the world on her way to the finals, she has proven that she is nowhere near done winning grand slams.
