Randall Cobb Kickoff Return TD: Rookie Needs to Take McCarthy's Word as Gospel

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Randall Cobb did a little bit of everything while at the University of Kentucky, and he seems to have carried that versatility over to the NFL.

Not only did Cobb score on a 32-yard pitch and catch, but he also returned a kickoff a record-tying 108 yards for a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints Thursday night.

The mystifying return, which can be seen above, featured Cobb receiving the ball in the back of the end zone before dashing out and being met with a big hit just past the 20-yard line. Cobb absorbed the hit and spun out like a whirling dervish, then proceeded to turn on the jets to go all the way for six.

This type of explosiveness has been missing in Green Bay's return game, and Cobb certainly adds a whole new dimension to their team. What fans didn't realize at the time of the return is that Cobb essentially disobeyed the orders of head coach Mike McCarthy, who does not want his return men returning anything deeper than five yards into the end zone.

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Cobb disregarded McCarthy's instructions and decided to listen to God instead.

"

“I was just trusting in God,” Cobb said. “He told me to bring it out. I’m not supposed to bring that out. Some things are logical and some things are just the power of God.”

"

Despite the incredible return, McCarthy was a little miffed after the game that Cobb decided to take it upon himself to bring the ball out of the end zone. While some may be puzzled as to why McCarthy is upset over a positive play his team made, it is quite understandable for a couple of reasons.

If McCarthy were to support the play 100 percent, then it would encourage Cobb to return the ball every time he touches it. As awesome as his return was on Thursday, the odds of him replicating it are astronomically low. More often than not, he'll get stuck short of the 20 and saddle the offense with poor starting field position.

Also, McCarthy needs to make sure that Cobb knows who his boss is.

Cobb may have received an assist from above on that return, but that's no way to go about playing the game of football. No disrespect to Cobb's faith, but the only higher powers Cobb needs to be listening to during a game are McCarthy and his position coaches.

If nothing else, Cobb's return showed that he could be a major weapon for a Packers team that already boasts an embarrassment of riches.

If he wants to continue to receive meaningful playing time, though, he needs to listen to McCarthy and put God on the back burner...even though most of his games will be played on Sundays.
