Saints vs. Packers: Randall Cobb Makes a Splash in NFL Debut

Eric BallJun 4, 2018

Welcome to the NFL, Randall Cobb.

In one of the best debuts in recent memory, the rookie from Kentucky was the difference-maker in the Green Bay Packers' 42-34 track meet against the New Orleans Saints.

Cobb, the second-round pick drafted mostly for his special teams skills, did it all for Green Bay on Thursday night.

He had two catches for 35 yards and a TD and an electrifying 108-yard kickoff return for a TD.

Now, who was complaining about the new kickoff rules?

Here are a few of the accomplishments Cobb achieved on opening night.

From Elias:

"

Randall Cobb is the only rookie in the Super Bowl Era with at least one rec TD and one KO ret TD in a teams season opener. He is the 4th player in NFL history to score at least 2 TD, with at least one KO ret TD IN NFL DEBUT. The last to do it? The immortal Bill Bowman in 1954 (sic).

"

From ESPN Stats and Information:

"

There's only been one play longer in NFL history than Randall Cobb's 108-yard kickoff return TD on Thursday. Only Antonio Cromartie's 109-yard missed FG ret in 2007 was longer (sic).

"

Wow.

Nothing like making history in your first game.

He has incredible speed and is great at using his blockers to avoid potential tacklers. He's a shifty player at 5'10'', 190 pounds and is going to be a huge weapon for Green Bay this season.

The Packers have incredible depth at wide receiver and can handle multiple injuries at the position with guys like Cobb ready to roll.

The Packers have found their new return man and another slot receiver to have at QB Aaron Rodgers' disposal.

And the rich get richer...
