US Open Tennis 2011: Friday Schedule, Preview and Bracket Update

Josh MartinSep 9, 2011

After two days of weather delays, the 2011 US Open finally got back on track at the National Tennis Center in New York on Thursday, though not without plenty of controversy and complaining from players, fans and officials alike.

On the men's side, top-seed Novak Djokovic made the first move into the semifinals when Serbian countryman Janko Tipsarevic retired in the fourth set. He will face third-seed Roger Federer, who triumphed over 11th-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 .

The long-awaited resumption of play also allowed Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, John Isner and Andy Murray to fill out the bottom of the bracket. Nadal, Roddick and Murray all had harsh words for the US Tennis Association, criticizing both the damp conditions on the court and the unfairness of having to win four matches in four days to claim the final Grand Slam of the season.

As for the women, top-seed Caroline Wozniacki continued her quest to silence her doubters with a victory over 10th-seed Andrea Petkovic in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Wozniacki's worthiness as the No. 1 women's tennis player in the world will be put to the test in the semifinals, where she will meet three-time US Open champion Serena Williams. The 28th-seed Williams kept alive her unbeaten streak at Flushing Meadows this year with a straight-set win over No. 17 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 7-5, 6-1.

In other action on the women's side, ninth-seed Samantha Stosur upset second-seed Vera Zvonareva, 6-3, 6-3, to move on to the other semifinal. The Australian Stosur will face unseeded Angelique Kerber, who knocked out 26th-seed Flavia Pennetta in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

The schedule of singles matches will be much lighter on Friday, with only the remaining two men's quarterfinals accompanying men's, women's and mixed doubles.
