Peyton Manning Injury: Colts QB to Miss 'Significant Time' with Latest Surgery

Wes ODonnellSep 8, 2011

Peyton Manning is not just going to miss Week 1 of the NFL season. The latest update on the Indianapolis Colts quarterback is that he's expected to miss "significant time" this year.

Indianapolis Colts fans across the nation may want to drop what they are holding.

According to Pro Football Talk, "a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Manning could have neck surgery as soon today, and that he will miss 'significant time' as he recovers."

The surgery, for what it is worth, is a good sign.

Manning wouldn't be rushed into surgery today or in the very near future if he wasn't expecting to return to the field this season.

By all accounts, Manning was far from ready to take the field this Sunday. If he did, it could have caused permanent damage to his career and the organization.

No. 18 has started 227 consecutive games in an NFL uniform. That streak is obviously ending and there is no official timetable for his return to the field.

We cannot even assume a timetable at this point.

Colts' owner Jim Irsay tweeted earlier today that Manning would be out "awhile." As to exactly what that means we do not know, but he must have known that his quarterback was on the verge of yet another surgery.

Just last night the eccentric owner denied that Manning had a second surgery on Twitter and, if this latest information is true, we can at least take him as a man of his word.

Kerry Collins is slated to be the starting quarterback in Week 1, but with this latest development it will be interesting to see if the Colts consider any other long-term options. One such recently released player, David Garrard, certainly comes to mind.

We will update additional information on Manning's status when more is known.
